The Toys and Tins appeal is a joint venture
between BBC Radio Norfolk
and the Salvation Army. The aim of the
appeal is to distribute gifts of food and toys to families in difficult
circumstances and it is supported through fund raising events, gift
services held by churches and direct appeal to the public.
The
main focus of the appeal is within the city of Norwich. But
Salvation Army centres in others parts of the county also respond to
requests. |
The 2009 appeal operated with the
generosity of the owners and management of Rose Lane Business Centre
who provided premises for us to sort, pack and distribute the gifts.
A
large number of supermarkets agree to host collection bins for the
public to place gifts in. These are supplementary to
collections at
Salvation Army centres throughout Norfolk and the sleigh in
the foyer
of Radio Norfolk in the Forum.

How Do We Select
The Families?
We contact agencies who have
provided us with
names in the past and invite them to nominate recipients. We
respect confidentiality and operate on a family name only, identifying
gifts for a child by the sex and age of the child only. In 2009 we received requests from 33
agencies and 15 personal requests.
Who Does All The Work?
The
scheme is managed and operated by volunteers. These include
Salvation
Army members, members of other churches and other interested
people.
Not all of the volunteers work on site as people are able to make
labels and gift tags for us by working at home. Additionally,
the
scheme receives secretarial support from the Norwich Citadel Administrator and
Divisional Headquarters staff. |

How Do We Transport The Gifts?
The distribution of goods and
collection of gifts from collection points in 2009 was possible because
of the generosity of Barford Van Hire
and Holdens. There were 17 volunteers who loaded and
delivered packs
as well as collecting necessary items from the warehouse and collection
points around the city. |
What Do We Distribute?
In 2009 we supplied a total of
865 packs of food
and 1358 packs of toys. This compares with 1039
packs of
food and 1510 packs of toys in 2008. The pack contents vary
according to the number of adults and children they are intended for.
We also provide baby packs to pregnant mums as well
as for
babies already born. |
